Sant'Egidio
Community was established in Rome soon after the
Council Vatican II in 1968. Sant’Egidio is an
ecclesiastic Community composed by laymen, who
live the Gospel helping the poors.
The
Community has its " heart " and origin
in the Roman church of Sant'Egidio. Many
volunteers offer their time in different sectors,
helping the elderly men neglected in the European
cities, assisting African children in faraway
villages, giving a concrete sign of solidarity to
the immigrants, assisting the people affected by
Aids, handicapped and nomads.
The
community aims at supporting the countries often
forgotten by public opinion and it is open to
promote the dialogue among religions in the world.
Since the appeal of the Pope John Paul II in
Assisi in 1986, the Community has been taking the
inheritance to promote each year the "prayer
for peace meeting" in the world.
It
is also intensive the activity in favor to the
solution of conflicts in progress in different
parts of the world: thanks to an effective
mediation, leaded by their representatives, the
Community had an important role for the end of the
civil war in Mozambique in 1992.
Thanks
to the free collaboration of thousand of members,
today the Community is active in Italy, over the
Europe, in America, Africa and Asia.
