IL PROGETTO E' INCOMINCIATO NEL MESE DI APRILE 2007

Tennis for Africa ha dato inizio al progetto nella capitale Freetown della Sierra Leone nello scorso mese di aprile 2007, con l'organizzazione di uno stage di 15 giorni lavorativi a favore di 15 istruttori di tennis locali e con il coinvolgimento di 200 bambini. L'attivitā č stata sviluppata sotto l'egida del ministero dello sport e dell'educazione. A distanza quasi di un anno č pronto l'invio di nuovo materiale sportivo di base per rinnovare l'abbigliamento dei bambini e degli istruttori.

DATA Aprile 7- 27 2007
PRIMO GIORNO      Meeting at the headquarters of Ministry of Youth & Sport with the representatives of the government for introducing the project and planning the activities. The meeting was attended by  Mr. Alphan Kukor of Ministry of Youth & Sport, Mr. Abibi Lahai representative of Ministry of  Education, 3 local tennis teachers and one journalist with the role of preparing a report about the work of Tennis for Africa for local press and radio netwoks. 
DAY 2 Opening session of the wokshop  at the courts located at Hill Station at 3 p.m.. Tennis for Africa association, represented by the teacher  Lorenzo Marcuzzi, introduces the program to take place in the following days trying to immediately involve the local teachers for the  preparation of the detailed  activities in line with local needs. After the preliminary phase, Marcuzzi opened a practical training on court. 
DAY 3 The activity went on with a technical session keeping in mind the needs of beneficiaries,  considering the age of children, their basic tennis level and the sport & humanitarian priorities. For this reason the training was also useful  for defining the main guidelines for the future, focussing on the support to youngers, between 6 and 12 years old.  In the afternoon the program included a practical work on court involving children in games with teachers. 
DAY 4 Tennis for Africa teacher organized the activity at Hill Station tennis court in the third day. The goal was to apply the lessons learned  in the first days with the active role of local teachers. The permanent contact with the families of children and with the local life was important for understanding how to work and what to carry out for the future. 
DAY 5 Intermediate meeting with the minister of Youth and Sport. Introduction about the project program and goals. The minister expressed satisfaction about the project promissing the best support to  Tennis for Africa. 
DAY 6 The activity of the workshop continued in a different venue, very closed to the capital sport stadium, according to the will of local authorities. The teacher of Tennis for Africa  organized the work with the best players of Sierra Leone: the age of players is  between 16 and 18 years old. In this phese the approach of teaching was different as before as the main goal was to improve the level of tennis for a better performance during the match.
DAY 7 The work with 16 / 18 years old players was completed at Hill Station again, as the air was more fresh than in downtown area. The Tennis for Africa teacher gave indications mainly for solving the problems regarding  the lack of tactical attitudue during the match.
DAY 8 Day of tennis practice on court involving local coaches
DAY 9 Closing day of the workshop: a meeting took place involving only local tennis teachers, making some evaulation about the activity, explaining the future work to carry out by the year. The program was approved by the beneficiaries and some organizative issues were clarified.
DAY 10 The small Tennis for Africa delegation visited  6 tennis schools in Freetown: the hard courts  were in bad condition and need to a be restrucutred soon as the surface is damaged by the climate. The school is attended by a huge number of children who play with rudimental tools fond everywhere on the streets. Basic tennis equipment is strongly required!  During the meetings Tennis for Africa introduced shortly the project that include a tennis event in Freetown offering a  scolarship in Italy for the best players.
DAY 11 Organization of a 1 day tournament at Hill Station involving children from  8 to 18 years old. At the end prizes for all, distributing new tennis raquets.
DAY 12 Day of relax with the organization of some friendly matches as a way to stay together and better enjoing the collaboration on the project. 
DAY 13 Final meeting at the Ministry of Youth and Sport. Tennis for Africa received particular thankses from the representatives and the tennis teachers. Tennis for Africa promised to go on in the project hoping to maintain the active cooperation of local authorities.

The sport program was managed by Lorenzo Marcuzzi (ITA) with the collaboration of  a documentary maker and writer Stefano Bozzo (ITA). 

 

 

The operative matters and the relationships with local authorities were managed by Julius Hubbard (SL) and  David Morsay (SL).

 

 

After the end of the stage in April YTennis for Africa has planned the distribution of tennis equipment to the selected children
