What a
difference a day makes!
A sunny day in Dublin was the setting for the first Tennis
for Africa fundraising event held in Ireland. Organised by
Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Club (www.lansdowneltc.com), the
tournament, open to all classes, attracted more than 180
players from more than fifteen Dublin tennis clubs. Five
clubs generously provided courts to facilitate the large
number of entrants, who played in a round robin format,
followed by a semi-final and final for each class.
The sunny weather contributed to the wonderful atmosphere
and high spirits of all the participants. Players and
friends later attended a superb reception in Lansdowne LTC,
where winners were presented with their Tennis for Africa
T-shirts by Julius Hubbard (TFA London), and where over 700
raffle tickets were sold. The very successful day was
brought to a lively close by a disco, where players showed
their best performance of the day on the dance-floor.
The day was made all the more enjoyable by the news that the
total funds raised reached over €8,900 to support two
Tennis for Africa – Saint Egidius projects. The Irish
spirit of generosity was shown further by the large
collection of tennis equipment which will be sent to the
Sierra Leone Tennis Association.
On behalf of the Tennis for Africa Dublin Committee, we
would like to extend our thanks to the generous support of
our sponsors:
Boutique Wines; Club Travel; Guinness; Liberty Asset
Management; Orpen Franks Solicitors; TSB-Permanent;
and to the kind donations from Greystones Lawn Tennis Club,
Elm Park Lawn Tennis Club and other private donors.
Also, the day would not have been possible but for the kind
support from several Dublin tennis clubs, who offered us use
of their facilities for the day: Claremont-Railway Union;
CYM; Donnybrook LTC; Mount Pleasant; Lansdowne LTC (Greystones
LTC; Shankhill LTC).
We look forward to the second edition!
